Sri Lanka imports about 60-70 tonnes of honey annually. With ideal climatic conditions, a wide array of nectar bearing flora and available technical expertise, an immense potential exists as a profitable business venture. Bee keeping does not require full time labour. 25-30 colonies can be managed by a single person while fully employed elsewhere.
Wild Holidays launched this CSR project to promote bees honey production and to promote the living condition of low income families in Uva Province. Mainly including villages of Bandarawela, Ella, and Wellawaya.
Already 100 bee boxes have been established in Ella Jungle Resort and 100 are being distributed among selected farmers who will be fully trained.
